Swine Flu influenza in Dubai ?

"Currently there is no actual threat of swine flu to the UAE. We are monitoring the situation," he said.

The outbreak of swine flu was first reported in Mexico and the United States and experts have warned about its pandemic potential as it has claimed over 68 lives and sickened over 1,000 others.

The alarming situation had forced World Health Organisation (WHO) director-general Margaret Chan to convene a meeting of

the Emergency Committee to assess the situation and advise her on appropriate responses.

After reviewing available data on the current situation, committee members identified a number of gaps in knowledge about the clinical features, epidemiology, and virology of reported cases and the appropriate responses.

In a telephone news conference in Geneva, Chan said: "The situation is evolving quickly. The new disease is by definition poorly understood."

Al Turki said: "This particular type of flu can be transmitted by being close to pigs; so in this regard there is no real threat in the UAE. The disease is also not transmitted through the food chain."

"We are also keeping a close surveillance on people coming from the infected part of the world based on the slightest flu like symptoms. There is a potential for this flu to turn into an epidemic because this particular virus changes its genetic composition. It can infect pigs but human-to-human transmission does not take place," he added.

Meanwhile, Francisco Alonso, consul-general of Mexico in Dubai, said that his diplomatic mission is yet to receive enquiries about the outbreak or panic calls from the community. No enquiries had been received from visa applicants either, he said. "My government is constantly in touch with us on this problem. There is nothing to panic. I am glad to inform you that the situation is very much under control in Mexico.

"There has been no fall in the number of visa applicants that we receive each day. The diplomatic mission was opened last year and since then the number of Emiratis who apply for a visa has risen. Majority apply for business visas. The consulate receives three to five visa applicants per day," he said.

One out of ten women is struck by breast cancer. A female technologist performs all our ultrasounds and mammograms. Breast cancer is the commonest female cancer, and accounts for the most cancer deaths in women. Eighteen percent of women who develop breast cancer will be under 50 years of age and with average 50% mortality this will produce a significant number of deaths in a population of wives and mothers. There are now major health programmes involved in research and development into prevention, early detection, and new treatments with the aim of reducing the morbidity and mortality from breast cancer The diagnosis is made by a combination of mammography, breast ultra-sound and increasingly core biopsy and histopathology of the breast lesion rather than the previously used fine needle aspiration and cytological analysis. A step by step guide to Breast Self Examination
When examining the breasts, use a vertical pattern, cover the entire breast and use varying pressure light, medium and firm using the pads, not the tips, of the fingers. The best time to check yourself is right after your period, when breast swelling and tenderness is over. Post-menopausal women should perform exams at the same time of the month, every month, so that it's not forgotten. Check your breasts using the following steps:
Lying Down Place a pillow under your right shoulder. Put your right hand under your head. Check your entire breast area with the finger-pads of your left hand. Use small circles and follow up and down pattern. Repeat on your left breast.
Before a Mirror Check for any changes in breasts' shape or look. Note any skin or nipple changes like dimpling or discharge. Inspect breasts in four steps: arms at side, arms overhead, hands on hips pressing firmly to flex chest muscles, and bending forward.
In the Shower Raise your right arm. With soapy hand and fingers flat, check your right breast. Use the method described in the ‘Lying Down’ step. Repeat on your left breast.

Images can be transmitted to the Tawam hospital for instant diagnosis. If lesions are suspected, further analysis can be carried out and a decision on whether treatment is required can be made within hours. Should treatment be necessary, Tawam has a complete support team at their dedicated state-of-the-art Breast Care Center in Al Ain - a regional first."While breast screening could be provided in the large hospital-based centres such as Tawam, it is important to reach out to the remainder of the female population. Developing a mobile screening programme to provide screening mammograms and breast health education to rural women in their own communities is the ideal solution, reflecting the needs of the local population whilst maintaining cultural deference," commented Michael E. Heindel CEO of Tawam Hospital.Initially the pilot project will operate in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, with plans to expand the program to include six or more units.
